"I was somewhat skeptical about the value of staging our home. After all, we lived in our house for 25 years and had already done many home improvements. However, when Mary came in and started to point out how the house would look more open and bigger if we removed some of the furniture, we became more aware that the furniture we had actually did make the house look smaller. Since we were planning to move and the furniture needed to be removed from the house anyway, we rented a Pack Rat storage unit. As we began to remove some of the furniture and most of the clutter, we could see the house open up.
Additionally, Mary has a great eye for what looks appealing to home buyers; small changes to light fixtures and mirrors made a big difference to an updated look to the home.
We had always liked the colonial look and had two rooms with wallpaper. Her recommendation was to remove the paper and paint the walls because people in their thirties don't like wall paper. When we asked our children (both in their thirties) they absolutely agreed and said: "get rid of the wall paper". The additional advantage was that the rooms being newly painted had a crisp, fresh look to them.
Finally, she recommended other small changes to the outside like a new light pole, flower beds, and painting the front doors to improve the curb appeal.
